Lviv and Galicia: local history matters

Research in the Lviv region often crosses Austrian, Polish and Soviet periods. Jurisdictions changed, and names were recorded in different languages.

For villages, identify the parish and known house number. For Lviv, an address, denomination, occupation and moves can matter. A modern place name alone may not identify the correct collection.

Where Galician family records may be held

I check the Central State Historical Archives in Lviv, regional archives and available Polish collections. The record’s origin and custody history determine the institution.

Parish registers establish generations. Josephine and Franciscan cadastral records, property and tax files may show farms, land and neighbours, depending on the period and preservation.

First, a clear plan. Research begins once we agree the task, budget and deliverable.

An example from Tiahliv and Prystan

The Antoniuk study combines parish entries, war and repression records and family charts to show how sources form a coherent family history.

All 48 pages are open for you to assess the content and presentation. Your own research scope is agreed separately, based on your information.

About the researcher

I am Serhii Panchyshyn, with a Master’s degree in History from Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. I specialise in archival research and reconstructing family connections across all historic Ukrainian regions of the former Russian and Austro-Hungarian empires.

My own tree has over 2,300 people, with branches traced seven to ten generations. Each new commission’s depth depends on its available sources.

Getting started from outside Lviv

Send details by Telegram, WhatsApp or email. A relative, place and approximate years are enough for assessment; no trip to Lviv is needed for the first enquiry.

We then choose a consultation at UAH 1,000, a focused search from UAH 1,200 or a branch from UAH 7,000. Timing and budget depend on the task.
