Why the region shapes the search
Different states, institutions and religious communities created records across today’s Ukraine. Historical borders at the event date matter alongside modern regional boundaries.
Galicia may offer Austrian and Polish registers and cadastral sources; Polissia and former Russian Empire territories, parish records, confession lists and revisions. Bukovyna and Transcarpathia require attention to other periods and languages.
Research coverage
My research covers all historic Ukrainian regions, from the Chełm region to Sloboda Ukraine, and from Polissia to the Azov region. I trace families in these lands of the former Russian and Austro-Hungarian empires. For each enquiry, I check surviving records and access, then agree on a research plan.
Records across modern borders can change the institution, access method, timing and costs. We discuss this before that stage begins.
First, a clear plan. Research begins once we agree the task, budget and deliverable.
Two examples, different archival sources
The Antoniuk study, centred on Tiahliv and Prystan, illustrates research with Galician sources, including records from the Austrian period. The Khylko family of Stuhivshchyna and Khlupliany shows research in Polissia, including documents from the Russian Empire. Together, they demonstrate different archival traditions and ways to establish family connections.
Both PDFs are open without registration. Compare generations, biographies, tables, illustrations and references. They show the format, not a promised depth for every family.
Research for families living abroad
Descendants may have only a foreign-language surname, an old place name and an approximate emigration date. We first match the place to modern geography and check similar names.
Send documents during correspondence. We agree stages: identify the place, find an event, verify parents and move back a generation.
Available services
Consultation: UAH 1,000; one person and event from UAH 1,200; a branch from UAH 7,000. Books and additional source work are agreed separately.
Tell me who you seek, the place and period. If little is known, say so: identifying the next useful clue is itself a valuable first step.
Questions about this service
Do you cover all of Ukraine?
Yes. I research families across Ukraine and the historic Ukrainian regions of the former Russian and Austro-Hungarian empires. I will check the available sources for your locality and propose a research plan.
What if the village is now outside Ukraine?
Identify its historical jurisdiction and where the records are held. Then we can assess the route and cost.
